The Evolution of an American Staple
Not long after the first automobiles took to the roads at the end of the nineteenth century, "horseless carriages" were modified to distribute commercial goods. These early trucks were mostly utilitarian, designed to fulfill specific needs and discarded once their service ended. Because preservation was rarely a priority, the surviving examples in this exhibit offer a rare look at the machines that built our modern world. The exhibit illustrates this metamorphosis—from humble delivery vehicles to today’s high-tech luxury pickups. Visitors will view rare selections from the Crawford’s permanent collection alongside specially loaned vehicles that showcase the truck's journey through American history.
A Cleveland Legacy
A centerpiece of the exhibition is the story of Cleveland’s own White Motor Corporation. Once a global leader in the industry, White Motor’s contributions were essential to the development of commercial trucking, cementing Cleveland’s reputation as a powerhouse of industrial innovation. From the long-haul delivery trucks that sustain our economy to the SUVs and pickups that dominate our driveways, Keep On Truckin’ offers a deep dive into the vehicles that define the American experience.
