Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) invites the public to experience Watching God, Seeking the Sacred, and Writing History, an exhibition exploring religion, spirituality, creativity, and community life in Black America through the arts and humanities. Designed by Charles E. Chambers, the exhibition is presented as part of the Arts and Humanities Alive (AHA!) Initiative, directed by Dr. Regennia N. Williams, and commemorates the 90th anniversary of Zora Neale Hurston's landmark novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.
The exhibition opens at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2026, in WRHS's African American History Gallery and the adjacent reception area of the historic Bingham-Hanna Mansion. The celebration continues at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 24, 2026, with a special performance by Hashtag Virgo.
Admission to opening events is free for WRHS members, friends of the AHA! Initiative, and program volunteers and is included with regular museum admission for all other guests. The exhibition will remain on view through fall 2027. Visitors are encouraged to wear the exhibition's theme colors, purple and gold for both events.
