We’re participating in Ohio Open Doors with three Open Houses - Shandy Hall, Holsey Gates House, and Jonathan Hale House. Brought to you by the Ohio History Connection, Ohio Open Doors is a statewide event when local sponsors open their historic buildings and landmarks to the public for special tours and programs for free.

Visitors can discover Ohio’s amazing heritage Thursday, Sept. 10, through Sunday, Sept. 20, as historic buildings and fascinating places across the state open their doors for special tours and events as part of the Ohio History Connection’s biennial event.

Admission to all Ohio Open Doors events is free. A list of the statewide events and activities is available at ohiohistory.org/opendoors.

Join us in honoring the history, design and stories of our historic place!

Explore the Hale House, a brick federal style built in 1825, which the Hale family lovingly nicknamed “Old Brick.”

The large three-story home was built into a slope with no rear windows on the first floor. Today, the first floor would be described as the “great room” with an open-floor concept including a kitchen, dining, and living areas. The second floor had a parlor that was used for special occasions and a formal dining room that was later used as a bedroom. The third floor was originally divided into six small bedrooms with no fireplaces or heat.

Western Reserve Historical Society is the oldest cultural institution in Northeast Ohio, the region's largest American history research center, and one of the leading genealogical research centers in the nation.
