"Some objects don’t make it to the showroom—but that doesn’t mean they don’t have a story."

Before the curtains close on Off the Rack: Hidden Treasures from the Crawford, join us for an evening dedicated to the misfits, the giants, and the absolute enigmas of our collection. This isn't your standard gallery stroll—it’s an intimate, final look at the unusual, oversized, and "spaceship-adjacent" objects that rarely see the light of day.

Program Highlights:

  • The Vault’s Greatest Hits (Staff Storytelling): Hear from the curators and collection managers who live among these objects. They’ll share the "why" behind the weird: why we keep a 15-foot-tall prototype, how we move the unmovable, and the secret histories that didn't make it onto the museum plaques.

  • Mechanical Autopsy & Conservation Secrets: Get a rare look at the "guts" of our most complex pieces. We’ll discuss the forensic side of museum work—analyzing decay, preserving fragile materials, and the high-stakes engineering required to keep these "hidden treasures" from falling apart.

  • The "Spaceship" Photo-Op: Get an up-close look at the Michigan Solar Car. With its futuristic, aerodynamic silhouette, it’s the perfect backdrop for a "galactic" photo before it returns to deep storage.

  • Curated Curiosities: A final walk-through of the exhibit’s most quirky and fragile pieces—many of which may not be on public display again for years.
