Hale Farm & Village captures the story of the Hale Family and their 200-year-old family farm nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley. Today, we encourage guests to craft the entrepreneurial spirit, steward a commitment to preserving the cultural landscape and sustain social and financial impact through a hand-crafted way of life.

All class registrations close 7 days prior to the event date.
Please check in at Admissions in the Gatehouse visitor center 15 minutes before the scheduled time of your workshop. Dress in comfortable, casual clothing, suitable for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes with sturdy soles and prepare to tie back long hair. Please bring a water bottle. For longer sessions, you are welcome to pack a lunch; our café is open 11 am – 3 pm for the purchase of light refreshments during museum hours.
Glassblowing

Explore the magic of forming molten glass into a beautiful work of art! This experience is facilitated by Hale Farm’s glassblower; no experience is necessary. Students should dress in casual, comfortable clothing, suitable for the weather. Long pants and sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Finished items will be available for pick-up at the MarketPlace in the Gatehouse visitor center after cooling time, one week after the workshop date.

Rigid Heddle Weaving

Learn the basics of weaving on a rigid heddle loom, a popular option for today’s handweavers. You will learn to warp a loom, select yarns, and weave a sample length of cloth that can be finished into a small table mat. A small number of looms are available for loan on a first come, first served basis upon request at the time of reservation. If you own a rigid heddle loom and would like to bring it, please contact the teacher in advance to make arrangements.

Natural Dye Day

Discover the surprising range of rich color created by making dyes using natural materials from the garden, field, forest or far away. Flowers, roots and leave, nut hulls, the bark from trees, and even bugs provide the natural palette for dyeing wool fibers in Hale Farm’s Dye Shop. Please dress in casual, comfortable clothing (that you won’t mind getting splashed by a little dye).

Pottery Hand Building with Salt Glaze Finish

Explore the possibilities in designing ceramic pieces for your home using basic techniques in hand building with clay. Use found items such as shells, kitchen tools, jewelry or lace to add surface interest and texture to make a creation uniquely your own. After the workshop, items will be given time to dry before firing. Finished pieces will be available after scheduled firing, 6-8 weeks after workshop date. Works will be salt glazed in our outdoor kiln, producing a clear finish with natural color variations.

Elevate your knitting and crochet artistry by making your own yarn! This introductory level spinning class examines types of fiber, preparing to spin, creating twist, and using a hand spindle to make enough wool yarn for a small project. A variety of spindles and sample fibers will be on hand for spinning discovery, as well as spinning wheels to try. Supplies include a student spindle, 4 oz. of wool roving, knitting or crochet patterns.

This Learn to Knit class is perfect for true beginners or anyone who wants to brush up on basic knitting skills. Yarn and needle choice, casting on and binding off, and knitting in the round are covered briefly, but the goal of each lesson is to get you knitting something fun! A supply list will be provided upon registration. Classes may be repeated with a specific project goal in mind.

Take a shopping break and create with us! Made in Ohio Workshops take place in the heart of the festival each day. Fall Wreaths use natural and foraged items to weave into a wall, table or door decoration that can be adapted through the seasons. Weave a Wall Hanging from naturally dyed yarn from Hale Farm’s Dye Shop and incorporate beads, charms, natural items or other whimsical treasures to fit your style.

Take a shopping break and craft something of your own! Learn new papercraft techniques including Victorian Paper Cones, Folded Stars or Woven Heart Baskets; keep creating until the session ends and take away everything you make!

Potter’s Apprentice: Potter y Hand Building Class for Youth
Age group: Youth age 7-11

Work with the potter to spiff up the shop, prepare for projects and create something amazing! Hand building techniques include slab, coil and pinch construction. Apprentices will be challenged to experiment with different found objects to create surface design and texture. After the workshop, items will be given time to dry before firing. Finished pieces will be available after scheduled firing, 6-8 weeks after workshop date. Works will be salt glazed in our outdoor kiln, producing a clear finish with natural color variations.

1820 Pioneer Days

What was it like in 1820? Pioneer kids tend the garden, cook in a Dutch oven, churn butter, make candles, and care for animals on the farm! Costumes are provided for each camper to wear during 1820 Pioneer Days.
1840 Village Days

What was it like in 1840? Village kids attend school, help bake bread in the wood stove, play games, search for wildlife in the forest and fields, and meet new friends! Costumes are provided for each camper to wearing during 1840 Village Days.
1860 Creative Days

What was it like in 1860? Creative Kids plan a play, present a shadow-puppet show, draw and paint, practice juggling and learn a few magic tricks to amaze the village audience! Costumes are provided for each camper to wear during 1860 Creative Days.
