Native American Cultural Weekend | Apr. 15 & 16

 

Hale Farm and Village is excited to welcome guests to our 2nd annual Native American Cultural weekend! For thousands of years, the Cuyahoga Valley has been home to diverse indigenous peoples. This weekend of programs will highlight the rich histories and cultures of Native peoples from our region and the state of Ohio, both past and present. Join cultural educators from Native nations connected to the Cuyahoga Valley for engaging and informative stories, presentations, and demonstrations and learn more about the history and archaeology of the Cuyahoga Valley.

 

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ongoing demonstrations with Native American Cultural Educators from federally-recognized tribal nations historically connected to the Cuyahoga Valley. 
  • Timed talks discussing the area’s Indigenous history, past and present Native American cultural practices, and a panel discussion featuring all of our Cultural Educators for the weekend!
  • Naturalist tours of the Hale Farm Sugar Bush, leaving on the hour from our Log Cabin site between 11am-3pm.
  • Log Cabin Site featuring Hearth and campfire cooking demonstrations highlighting the Three Sisters and native area resources. 
  • Hale House open with ongoing natural dye demonstrations and interactive fiber tables!
  • Hale Farm & Village grounds open for guests to explore.

10:30am-11:30am | Dr. Phil Wanyerka, “The Native Peoples of the Crooked River: A Chronological Look at the Prehistoric Occupation of the Cuyahoga Valley”

1:30pm-3pm | Panel Discussion, “Telling the Stories: Native Peoples, Living History, and the Past in the Present” 

Please Note: Our focus for the weekend is on our Native American Cultural Presenters. For this reason we will not offer our typical trade-artisan demonstrations during the weekend and our 1840’s Village will be an explore-on-your-own option!

Vintage Baseball & Picnic Days | Apr. 23, May 7 & Jun. 11

 

Experience ‘base ball’ of the 1860’s, while enjoying a spring day in the historic Cuyahoga Valley!

Hale Farm & Village is excited to be the spring home of the Akron Black Stockings, a vintage baseball team, as they compete against regional rivals on our historic grounds with 19th century gear and rules of play. Enjoy local brews and bites along with special Hale Farm experiences throughout the day.

Hale Farm & Village doors open at 10am, gameplay begins around 12 noon. Limited Hale Farm sites will be open, exploring period picnic favorites and offering special experiences.

Citizens of Hale Plant Sale | May 18-20

 

No Admission – Grounds will not be open (special tours & workshops only)

Explore the bounty of herbs, perennials, and pollinator-friendly plants offered for sale by the Citizens’ of Hale Farm volunteer auxiliary! Enjoy special Hale Farm experiences, drop-in crafting projects, and close up encounters with our heritage breed animals.

Sign-up for a full herb planter workshop, or enjoy browsing the plant sale and take home some special herbs to make your own! Plant sale proceeds and workshop registration help support the Agriculture & Horticulture Programming at Hale Farm & Village.

Crooked River Festival | Jun. 17 & 18

 

Come explore the history of the “Crooked” Cuyahoga River, and its ever changing communities of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Join us for living history demonstrations and immersive activities exploring life around the turn of the 19th century in the Cuyahoga Valley. Step back into a unique period of history, and immerse yourself in storytelling, folk music, and artisan traditions that defined Northeast Ohio and a new nation.

– Frontier cooking and lifeways demonstrations

– Great Lakes Brewing Company Hop College tasting classes highlighting Commodore Perry and other IPAs

 

 

Civil War Weekend | Aug. 12 & 13

 

Experience Hale Farm & Village in a unique way during our Civil War Weekend!

 

Step back into the 1860’s Civil War era to explore reenactor camps and our historic sites as we bring to life the diverse experiences and stories of people from Northeast Ohio and across the country. A living history program series, Voices From the Past, will present the lives of both free and enslaved peoples through first-person interpretations. In addition, join us for a robust schedule of timed and ongoing presentations from partners exploring the historic and cultural importance of the time period.

Event Highlights:

  • Voices From the Past, a living history program series–presenting diverse stories of historical figures

  • Interactive opportunities within our Reenactor Encampments

  • Historic sites featuring immersive experiences of daily life for Western Reserve citizens during the Civil War

  • Archival highlights exploring the real stories of local soldiers
