Politics and Governance

This history of politics and governance in Cleveland, its suburbs, and the Western Reserve is documented extensively throughout approximately 400 manuscript and photograph collections. The papers of every Cleveland mayoral administration that are known to exist are housed at the WRHS library as are the papers of numerous Cleveland City Council members. The library has the papers of municipal, county, circuit, appeals, bankruptcy, and federal court judges. The papers of local men and women who were appointed and elected to federal offices, including the Presidency, Supreme Court, and Congress are included. The papers of Supreme Court Justice Harold H. Burton, Congressman Louis Stokes, Senator Howard Metzenbaum, President James Garfield, and Secretary of War Newton D. Baker are just a few of the nationally prominent collections held by WRHS. WRHS is a local government records repository and holds the records of municipalities throughout northeast Ohio.
