1891 Maternity Hospital of Cleveland opens; later known as MacDonald Women’s Hospital of University Hospitals of Cleveland

1891 Rainbow Cottage established to care for crippled and convalescent children; later known as Rainbow Babies and Childrens Hospital of University Hospitals of Cleveland

1892 Rescue (later known as Booth Memorial Hospital) established by Col. Mary Stillwell of the Salvation Army to primarily serve unwed mothers

1892 Fairview Hospital founded as the Society for Christian Care for the Sick and Needy/Bethesda Deaconess House

1892 Young Ladies Hebrew Association established to provide care for the needy and the sick

1893 The John Huntington Arts and Polytechnic Trust established through the will of John Huntington to establish a polytechnic school and the Cleveland Museum of Art

1894 National Council of Jewish Women, Cleveland Section, established to provide social, charitable, and educational assistance to Jewish immigrants and the Jewish community in Cleveland

1894 Dyke School of Commerce established by Frank Dyke; later became Dyke College/David N. Meyers University

1894 Fortnightly Musical Club founded to promote classical music in Cleveland

1894 St. Luke’s Hospital founded as Cleveland General Hospital by several physicians including Gustav Weber and Marcus Rosenwasser

1895 Alta House, largely financed by John D. Rockefeller and named in honor of his daughter Alta Rockefeller Prentice, founded in Little Italy as a day nursery for the children of working Italian women

1895 Children’s Fresh Air Camp and Hospital (later known as Health Hill Hospital for Children) founded to provide rehabilitation and specialty care for children

1895 Home of the Holy Family orphanage established by Ellen Donovan

1896 Hiram House social settlement founded by George Bellamy and others through a student project at Hiram College ; philanthropist and industrialist Francis Prentiss was an active supporter and board member

1896 Volunteers of America of Northeast Ohio founded to serve the poor and homeless

1896 Citizens League of Greater Cleveland, successor to the Municipal Association and the Civic League, founded to evaluate political candidates and issues and to promote good government

1896 Lutheran Hospital established by the Evangelical Lutheran Hospital Association of Cleveland

1896 Goodrich House social settlement established by Flora Stone Mather and Old Stone Church

1896 Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People (later Eliza Bryant Center) founded through the efforts of Eliza Bryant, Sarah Green, and Lethia Fleming with the help of the African American community

1898 Jewish Settlement House founded by the Jewish Council Educational Alliance

1898 Windsor Hospital founded in Cleveland as the Windsor Hydriatic Institute by Dr. Christian Sihler to treat patients with minor nerve disorders and psychiatric illnesses

1897 Horace Kelly Art Foundation established; the foundation combined funds with the John Huntington Arts and Polytechnic Trust to establish the Cleveland Museum of Art

1899 Jewish Infant Orphan Home founded by the Infant Orphan Mothers’ Society
