Marriage and Death Notice Index from the Jewish Independent and Jewish Review and Observer (1889-1964)
This index contains over 25,000 marriage and death notices published in the Jewish Independent and the Jewish Review and Observer between 1889 and 1964. These two English-language newspapers, predecessors of today’s Cleveland Jewish News, served the Jewish community for over three-quarters of a century.
The index is searchable by family name. It will provide the date, page, and column in which the death and/or marriage notice appeared along with a reference to the specific newspaper title. While the index can confirm a marriage or death, the actual notice may include important additional information that can lead to other avenues of research.
Researchers can access and make copies from both newspapers at the Western Reserve Historical Society Library/Archives. Reference staff will provide copies for researchers unable to schedule a visit to the Western Reserve Historical Society. For information about hours, admission fees, and research fees, contact the reference staff at 216-721-5722, x1509, or via email at reference@wrhs.org
Please note that not all marriages and deaths within the Jewish community were noted in the Jewish Independent and Jewish Review and Observer. Researchers are encouraged to turn to other sources if their search here is not successful.
