Hale Farm & Village captures the story of the Hale Family and their 200-year-old family farm nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley. Today, we encourage guests to craft the entrepreneurial spirit, steward a commitment to preserving the cultural landscape and sustain social and financial impact through a hand-crafted way of life.

Please check in at Admissions in the Gatehouse visitor center 15 minutes before the scheduled time of your workshop. Dress in comfortable, casual clothing, suitable for the weather, wear closed-toe shoes with sturdy soles and prepare to tie back long hair. Please bring a water bottle. For longer sessions, you are welcome to pack a lunch; our café is open 11 am – 3 pm for the purchase of light refreshments during museum hours.

Hale Farm & Village Preservation Series: Wood Windows 101

Replacement windows aren’t all they’re cracked up to be. In fact, a historic wood window will last many times longer than its modern replacement if maintained properly over time. Robert Brookover, craftsman and owner of the Cohee Preservation Company, will demonstrate and discuss the many facets of keeping your historic wood windows in working order for decades to come. Please remember to bring your lunch pail.
Participants will learn:
• A brief overview of the history, science, and philosophy of historic wood windows
• Assessment of conditions and planning the restoration
• All steps of restoration from removal to reinstallation
• Historic preservation standards
• Safety equipment and procedures
• Weatherization methods

Glassblowing

Glass Blowing
Adults and youth age 11 and up
Cost: $72 for members, $82 for non-members

Glass blowing is mesmerizing to watch, and even more amazing when you do it yourself! The glass blower will guide you through the process, from handling equipment, gathering molten glass, applying color, and creating your glass piece.

Finished glass pieces available for pick-up at the museum MarketPlace one week following the workshop.

Weaving

Adults and youth age 11 and up
Cost: $72 for members, $82 for non-members

Weaving has a rich history, and what better way to explore it than to try it for yourself? This season’s workshops follow the thread from backstrap, box or tape looms, to today’s rigid heddle looms. These popular, low-cost looms are a satisfying introduction to weaving as well as a fun new frontier for experienced textile artists. Yarn choice, winding and warping, and basic weave structures are covered in this three-hour session; private lessons available for those who wish to continue to learn.
Bring your own rigid heddle loom or borrow one of ours (reservation required).

Natural Dyeing

Adults and youth age 11 and up
Cost: $72 for members, $82 for non-members

Historical, sustainable and beautiful, natural dye methods are enjoying renewed interest by home artists and major manufacturers alike. This summer series follows the seasonal availability of dyestuffs, including onion skins, nut hulls, flowers and leaves. Learn how to prepare yarn for color-fastness by mordanting, make an assortment of dyes, then experiment on protein fibers.

Spinning

Adults and youth age 11 and up

Knitters, crocheters and handweavers are discovering the joy of crafting with handspun yarn. Learn to spin yarn from wool fibers using portable spindles or spinning wheels. With the diversity of tools and techniques, choose the learning option that fits your needs to make the yarn you want!

Begin to Spin: Great Wheel, Saxony Wheel or Spindle
Flexible dates; call to schedule
Cost: $36 for per two-hour lesson
Each lesson builds upon the last. Learn about types of wool preparation for spinning, drafting techniques to vary yarn texture, and finishing yarn to use. Bring your own wheel to class, or use one of ours (reservation required). Classes are offered in drop spindle, Saxony Wheel and Great Wheel spinning.

 

Advance registration is required for most workshop and class experiences at least 7 days prior to each scheduled session.
