The Western Reserve Historical Society welcomes undergraduate and graduate students to work and learn with our staff.  Internships at WRHS are not just for the History Major, but are also available in all levels of non-profit management. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable hands-on experience with one of the finest regional historical societies in the country. At this time, all internships available are unpaid. Students may receive college credit for their internships (depending on their individual college programs).

Public History Summer Internship

The Summer Internship in Public History offered throughout the Western Reserve Historical Society is ideal for those thinking of entering into or working with: Museum Management, History Majors, Fundraising, Education, Interpretation, Non-profit management, Curatorial, Registrar, Exhibit design/production, Research and other jobs related to Historical Society functions.

All interns participating in this particular internship program attend classes once a week for 9 weeks during which you learn about museum and non-profit operations. The rest of the week is spent working and learning in your chosen field. Summer Public History Internships are available at both the Cleveland History Center in Cleveland’s University Circle, and at Hale Farm & Village in Bath, Ohio.

Interviews for the summer internship in public history take place in April and May.  Internships will be awarded based on applicant interest and aptitude, as well as available positions.

The following internship opportunities are available for Summer 2019:

Project Title: Library Reference Intern
Location: CHC
Department: Library/Archives
Project Description: Library Reference Intern activities include greeting and registering incoming Library patrons, explaining WRHS Library rules and procedures. Front desk interns will assist the Library Reference Team with visitor inquiries about WRHS collections, access to the WRHS online catalog and on research and genealogy projects. Interns also assist with retrieving and shelving library materials, filling photocopy requests and special research projects. Interns will research their own family history and become familiar with WRHS genealogy and historical resources. Interns will broaden research skills, expand knowledge of WRHS resources and experience working in a special collections library.

Requirements: Interest in History, detail oriented, works well with the public, students, volunteers, trust worthy.
Hours per Week: Up to 20 hours, mostly Thursday through Saturday during Library open hours.

Project Title: Education & Public Programming Intern
Location: CHC
Department: Education and Public Programs
Project Description: Interns in Education and Public Programs will engage with a variety of projects and events, working closely with the Lead Educator and other departmental staff. Projects may include: research and interpretation of sites and collection materials; planning for education programs serving all ages; maintaining quality of education spaces and materials; assisting with summer events and student programs, from set up to tear down; event planning; and program sales support. The Education and Public Programs interns will assist in developing and delivering authentic learning experiences that incorporate primary source materials and place-based educational experiences for all audiences.
# Of Interns Needed: 2
Requirements: Excellent communication and organization skills, creativity, and commitment to serving the public.

Project Title: Curator & Collections Internship
Location: CHC
Department: Collections
Project Description: The curator & collections intern will work with the Curator of Collections & Exhibits directly. Collection management projects include object and art cataloging, movement and inventory.
# Of Interns Needed: 2 (Will work as a pair)
Requirements: Attention to detail, work without direct supervision, able to work in storage areas.

Project Title: Costume Collection Intern
Location: CHC
Department: Costume and Textiles
Project Description: The costume and textiles intern will work with the curator on exhibitions and collections management. Exhibition work may include research and installation. Collections management projects include object cataloging, object movement, and collection inventory. Interns are also expected to complete an independent research project of their choosing that will culminate in a small display proposal.
# Of Interns Needed: 1
Requirements: Open to graduate and undergraduate students in art history, history, or related fields. Knowledge of historical dress resources and graphic design a plus. Applicants should have demonstrated experience with primary resource research, and be willing to work in a self-directed environment.
Hours Per Week: Up to 20. Interns will work at the museum on either Thursdays or Fridays with the option to fulfill their hours remotely (performing research, for example).

Project Title: Encyclopedia of Cleveland History Research Interns 
Location: CHC
Department: Research and Publications
Project Description: This internship will involve the research and writing of entries for the on-line Encyclopedia of Cleveland History. The ECH is the first urban encyclopedia to go on line and is project of Case Western Reserve University with content support from the Western Reserve Historical Society. The ECH receives nearly a million page views per year and is a vetted scholarly project. Interns will prepare entries on businesses and not-for-profit organizations that have existed in northeastern Ohio for over a century. The focal point for research will be the library of the Western Reserve Historical Society.
Requirements: Interns for this project must have strong research and writing skills. Dr. John J. Grabowski, editor of the ECH and Senior VP for Research and Publications at WRHS will oversee the internship.

Project Title: Marketing Intern
Location: CHC
Department: Marketing
Project Description: Intern would assist with marketing tasks and social media management as needed. Duties may include writing content for Facebook and Twitter on timely historical topics; researching trends in local event and museum promotion; proposing strategies for promoting Cleveland History Center events and programs; creating marketing materials for upcoming events and programs; and assisting with market research and guest surveys. The Marketing Intern will take on special projects as assigned.

Requirements: This person should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with some knowledge and interest in social media, media/community outreach, and creative. Experience in Microsoft Office applications, various social mediums, and Adobe Creative Suite required.

Project Title: Hospitality Event Planning & Retail Sales
Location: CHC
Department: Gift Shop & Rentals
Project Description: Sales—Learn all phases of museum gift shop from set-up, cash handling, restocking and inventory. Events—Learn all phases of events with client bookings, vendor purchases, set-up, day of event and breakdown.

Requirements: Willingness to learn and be hands-on in all phases of events and sales.

Project Title: Museum Education Intern
Location: HFV
Department: HFV Education Project Description: Interns work closely with the Education & Public Program Manager to create authentic learning models that incorporate primary source materials and place-based educational experiences for all audiences. Projects apply to the day to day operation of the museum and the coordination of special events, including day camps for youth, workshops for adults and themed programming.

Requirements: Interns should display excellent communication skills, creativity, and willingness to be trained in multiple areas to provide hands-on interactive programming.

Project Title: Horticulture & Gardening Intern
Location: HFV
Department: HFV Agriculture and Horticulture
Project Description: Interns assist with all aspects of horticulture & garden maintenance, including the demonstration of historic practices and techniques. Seasonal experiences may include the coordination of Farm to Café projects.

Requirements: Interns work closely with the Agriculture & Horticulture Coordinator to apply & coordinate agricultural practices and techniques to enhance the quality of the museum’s agriculture & horticulture program and enhance guest experiences. All intern positions are ‘hands on’

Project Title: Animal Husbandry Intern
Location: HFV
Department: HFV Agriculture and Horticulture
Project Description: Interns assist with all aspects of livestock management and sustainability at the museum, including guest education and interaction. Livestock include: oxen, sheep, hogs and chickens.

Requirements: Interns work closely with the Agriculture & Horticulture Coordinator to apply & coordinate agricultural practices and techniques to enhance the quality of the museum’s agriculture & horticulture program and enhance guest experiences. All intern positions are ‘hands on’.

Project Title: Historic Preservation Intern
Location: HFV
Department: Maintenance/Preservation
Project Description: Intern assists with all aspects of historic preservation in relation to the historic structures. Candidates must have a willingness to learn and demonstrate construction skills and complete hands on projects relating to historic preservation. Projects include carpentry, painting, research and information collection including but not limited to historic structure reports, presentation creation and project management.
