Advance registration is required for most workshop and class experiences at least 7 days prior to each scheduled session.

 

Natural Dyeing

Adults and youth age 11 and up

Cost: $72 for members, $82 for non-members

 

Historical, sustainable and beautiful, natural dye methods are enjoying renewed interest by home artists and major manufacturers alike. This summer series follows the seasonal availability of dyestuffs, including onion skins, nut hulls, flowers and leaves. Learn how to prepare yarn for color-fastness by mordanting, make an assortment of dyes, then experiment on protein fibers.

Spinning

Adults and youth age 11 and up

 

Knitters, crocheters and hand weavers are discovering the joy of crafting with handspun yarn. Learn to spin yarn from wool fibers using portable spindles or spinning wheels. With the diversity of tools and techniques, choose the learning option that fits your needs to make the yarn you want!

 

Begin to Spin: Great Wheel, Saxony Wheel or Spindle

Flexible dates; call to schedule

Cost: $36 for per two-hour lesson

Each lesson builds upon the last. Learn about types of wool preparation for spinning, drafting techniques to vary yarn texture, and finishing yarn to use. Bring your own wheel to class, or use one of ours (reservation required). Classes are offered in drop spindle, Saxony wheel and Great Wheel spinning.

 

Please check in at Admissions in the Gatehouse visitor center 15 minutes before the scheduled time of your workshop. Dress in comfortable, casual clothing, suitable for the weather, and wear closed-toe shoes with sturdy soles. Prepare to tie back long hair. Bring a water bottle.
