Lost Cleveland Holiday Stories
Laura Demarco’s book Lost Cleveland explores the rise and fall and the enduring spirit of a gritty city. The book features more than 200 Cleveland photos and 65 lost landmarks from the 1800s to today. DeMarco will take guests on a visual and oral tour through Cleveland’s glorious past and the ghosts that inspire us today. Lost Cleveland features architectural gems, elegant theaters, famous concert halls and stadiums, grand department stores, and bustling factories that helped turn Cleveland into America’s fifth largest city—and one of its most prosperous.

Laura DeMarco Bio

Laura DeMarco is the author of the 2017 book Lost Cleveland, and the new book Cleveland Then and Now. Both are a trips back in time to Cleveland’s glorious and gritty past. Cleveland Then and Now traces the city’s rise and fall and rise again over the last 150 years through pairing vintage photos with their modern day viewpoint. Lost Cleveland features more than 200 archival photos over 144 pages, and entries on 65 lost landmarks. Laura is an arts and culture reporter for the Plain Dealer newspaper in Cleveland. She specializes in local history and lost landmarks, an interest that began with teenage adventures through abandoned buildings and Cleveland’s industrial wastelands. She covers historical preservation, cultural institutions, immigrant groups, neighborhoods and the forgotten stories of Cleveland’s most interesting characters. Laura has also written for the Cleveland Free Times, Cleveland Scene, Alternative Press, Magnet magazine and publications of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. A third-generation Clevelander, she grew up listening to her grandmother’s and parents’ stories of Euclid Beach Park, Municipal Stadium and downtown department stores and loves to share these with new generations.

The goal of the Cleveland Stories Dinner Party is to bring to life some of the fun, interesting stories about Cleveland’s past – from sports, to rock ‘n roll, to Millionaire’s Row, — the series will focus on tidbits from Cleveland’s past that will really thrill the audience. The Music Box is presenting this series in partnership with the Western Reserve Historical Society’s new Cleveland History Center. We think the Cleveland History Center is one of the most important museums in Cleveland. An unknown gem that Clevelanders should know more about, and support. It is the only museum in Cleveland dedicated to preserving and documenting the history of Cleveland. The Cleveland History Center includes two mansions, the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, Research Library, Kidzibits Hands-On Gallery, rotating exhibitions, and the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel.
