1920. A new decade has dawned, ushering in an era of hidden speakeasies, shortened hemlines, jazz music, and – underneath it all – vast political change. 100 years later, we invite you to step back in time as we celebrate our newest permanent exhibit, Women & Politics, with a 1920s soiree in our historic Bingham-Hanna Mansion.

Travel back to 1920s Cleveland to celebrate the historic passage of the 19th Amendment. Be the first to see the Cleveland History Center’s new exhibit as you enjoy food, dancing, and libations in our Bingham-Hanna Mansion and Garden. Themed attire is strongly encouraged, so dust off your glad rags and come decked out in your 1920s best!

May: Carousel Explorer

How would you design a carousel? For this lesson, students will learn the history of our 109-year-old Euclid Beach Grand Carousel and get to ride it! Students will then study and classify the different types of carousel designs. Lastly, students will create their own carousel or carousel horse!

How do science and math affect everyday life? This month, students will study how the laws of math and science affect the way people live. Then, students will learn how museum engineers use STEM to create learning spaces for all visitors. Students will also be given the opportunity to create and crack different codes!

Black History on Tap: The Living Legacy of Leo’s Casino

Join us for an after-hours party honoring the legendary Leo’s Casino nightclub! Guests will immerse themselves in 1960’s Cleveland and enjoy the sights and sounds of the famous R&B and Jazz club. Event features include live music, archival images of the Legends that rocked Leo’s stage, themed activities, and a unique look at Cleveland’s past from the decade. February: Cleveland Explorer

How have the lives of Clevelanders changed through time? In this program, students will skills to compare and contrast “long ago” and “today.” Then, they will examine how Cleveland has changed over time. Students will understand how the idea of childhood and growing up have evolved throughout history as a result of changing work responsibilities and their surrounding environment.

Why is transportation important? During this field trip, students will study how transportation has changed over time, specifically the role Clevelanders played in changing forms of transportation. They will learn more about Cleveland’s rich history as a transportation center and worldwide car capitol.

Homeschool Field Trip Days | Special Curator Session

December: Special Curator Session

Join us for a special hands-on session with our curators! Choose from one of the two options below:

Option 1: Hands-On History—Cleveland at War. Explore the life of a soldier and get hands-on with the materials and equipment Clevelanders would have dealt with during historic wartime experiences. Curator of Collections & Exhibits Eric Rivet will describe how wars of the past have affected Cleveland and walk students through the daily experiences of soldiers in the field.

Option 2: Behind-the-Scenes Costume Experience—Si Jolie. Meet our Museum Advisory Council Curator of Costumes & Textiles Patty Edmonson and enjoy a special curator-led tour of the beautiful exhibit, Si Jolie, to learn how French fashion influenced Clevelanders both abroad and right here in the city. Families will have a chance to experience more of the Chisholm Halle Costume Collection in a special way!

Holiday Open House

Kick off the season with a Holiday Open House in our Hay-McKinney Mansion! This year, help decorate our mansion for the holidays and get a behind-the-scenes look as we install our special holiday exhibits. Children are invited to decorate their own holiday treats and create cards to take home or to send to veterans at the neighboring Louis Stokes VA Hospital. Then, venture upstairs for story time in the home’s historic nursery before exploring the rest of our galleries.

In appreciation of your membership, this event will be offered at no cost to WRHS members. General admission is $15 for adults and $10 for children and includes admission to all museum exhibits PLUS two rides apiece on the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel.

Holiday Craft | Create your own holiday cards to send to a loved one OR to a veteran at the Louis Stokes VA Hospital.

Story Time | Gather in our children’s nursery for readings from your favorite classic holiday stories. (Readings offered every 30 minutes, beginning at 1:30pm.)

What does citizenship mean to you? For this month, students will answer what it means for them to be a “citizen” and discuss what it means for others as well. Additionally, students will learn how they can effect change for the benefit of themselves and others.

Electric, Steam, or Gasoline | About the Exhibit

Today’s automobile designers and manufacturers are focused on adjusting to increased demands for power and fuel alternatives. The hope is that pollutant-free, long range, and efficient vehicles are just over the horizon.

But that’s not new!

As the Twentieth Century dawned, only 20% of American cars ran on gasoline! Come to the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum and see over 100 years of technological innovation. Learn how our current thoughts regarding the future of transportation are firmly rooted in a fascinating past.

How do we learn from the past? This month, students will learn and practice basic study skills to help them become a better history analyst. Students will practice observing, classifying, reflecting, and synthesizing information from various sources. They will then explore primary sources and learn how to use them. This will allow students to connect lessons from the past to today.
