After several years of experience with the museum through visits, attending tech sessions, a short time with the Friends and attending their car shows, as soon as the museum started to solicit volunteers I signed up.  I followed Joe Karpency in and we were assigned to inventorying a room full of donated car parts trophies and miscellaneous stuff.  I think I did the same parts a dozen times in my 12 or 13 years.  It got more interesting when we branched out to rescue cars of the collection that had been stored in "as received" condition thru out town in vacant warehouses.  With Joe as ace and ex White motors mechanic and our Crawford leader's expertise and me as a Car Nut we kept busy for a long but rewarding time.  When the Macedonia facility was obtained and the volunteer crew increasing to 2 shifts we were soon getting the collection cars sorted out and putting them in running condition.

With the mix of talents and great group of volunteers my Car Nut fever, inherited from my father who encouraged and trained me I remain enthused and look forward to some changes to preservation of the collection.  Just incidentally my fever started at the age of 15 with a model A and continued to today with a variety of cars bought, fixed up, sold, and attending several car shows each year.

I will say that I volunteer at Hale Farm for a number of reasons. I find the setting peaceful and I want to do whatever I can to help keep this gem up and running.
I can and will do anything asked of me, from taking trash out to chopping and splitting wood. I enjoy the interaction with the dedicated employees I have come to know these last three years. While I have seen much improvement over this time, I sincerely hope we can continue to move forward in all phases of our farm.

I’ve volunteered at Hale Farm and Village for about six years.  I’ve been assigned many different jobs – popping corn over the open fire, children’s games and toys, cider press, maple syrup testing, and selling pop and water.  My favorite assignment, however, is Apple Butter making.  I just love working during the week when all of the school groups come out to the farm.  Many of the kids have never been to a farm, much less seen anyone cooking over an open fire.  I always ask what they think the ingredients are (there are only two.)  It’s funny when I get such items as butter, milk, water, milk, etc.  I have them all stir the apples and cider (oh no, now you know my recipe!) and have them peek into the pot when they are going to the village and again when they come back through – that way they can see how it has changed with the cooking process.  I also have the kids sample the apple butter and give them the recipe so they can make it in their classroom – it is a 1:4 ratio – 1 cup cider to 4 cups cored, peeled, sliced apples.  Just throw it in the crock pot on high with the lid a little ajar and stir it every now and then.  It is wonderful to see the kids appreciate the fruits of my labor – and learn a little in the process.

I have been a volunteer in the Library for 15 years.  I have a Master’s degree in History and wanted to stay involved in that field, so I decided to volunteer.  My main role has been to assist patrons with their genealogy research and work on special projects.  My most memorable moment as a volunteer was working with a patron who had spent 3 years trying to locate information on a family member.   It took some time and a little luck, but we were able to find the individual (this was before so many records were available online).  The patron was so excited as he had a family reunion coming up and he would be able to show this information to his mother and other family members.  I enjoy working with the patrons because each family history is unique, and the patrons are so grateful when you help them resolve a research road block.
