This Month's Question:
Dear President Garfield,
I'm doing a report on you for my 5th grade project at school. Can you please answer the following question?
Before you were president, did you have any hobbies?
Thank you,

My Dear Miss Wright,
Your letter from the 16th instant came duly to hand. I would have to say that my favorite hobby is reading books. I started reading when I was three years old and have over 2,000 books in my library at home! I liked adventure stories when I was a young boy, especially books about pirates and sailing on the high seas. But I have read a wide variety of books in my lifetime: poetry, Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, books in different languages, books about religion, philosophy, law, mathematics, science, history, etc.--even books about having a modern farm.
I also like playing card games (especially whist and euchre) and billiards, and particularly enjoy riding my horse (my doctor says it's good exercise) or taking a long drive in my carriage. Some of my favorite afternoons in
Washington, D.C. as a congressman were spent at the baseball park watching the Nationals play. Admission was 25 cents and ladies were admitted free. And, my entire family enjoys a good game of croquet.
I am not a musician, but I do love the Gilbert & Sullivan operettas, especially H.M.S. Pinafore. Attending plays at the theatre is also a favorite pastime.
As you can see, I have many, varied hobbies. I am very flattered that you are doing a report about me for your school project. Please write and let me know how everything turns out.
Very Truly Yours,
J. A. Garfield!
