CLEVELAND, OH – Imagine yourself behind the wheel of a classic car, learn what life was like for Italian Americans in WWII, explore the history of the Ohio & Eire Canal, and discover the artist in you at WRHS with the following public programs this October:
 
 
Wednesday, October 15, 2008 – 7:00 p.m.
 
Car Club Showcase Opening Night - Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum Director Allan Unrein and Friends of the CAAM introduce highlights of the Best of the Best: Cleveland Car Club Showcase Exhibit. 6:30 light refreshments.  Free with museum admission.
 
 
Wednesdays, October 15 to November 5, 2008 - 10:30 to 12 noon
 
Coffee with a Curator Session 1 - Chat with curators from the Cleveland Botanical Garden, the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and the Western Reserve Historical Society (10/22).  Cost is $50.  This is a Tri-C Encore Program.  To register call 216-987-3075
 
 
Sunday, October 19, 2008 – 1:15 p.m.
 
“PRISONERS AMONG US” – Director Michael DiLauro talks about and shows the film, an award winning documentary about Italian-Americans and World War II, specifically the internment camps into which some Italian Americans were forced. Pamela Dorazio Dean, Associate Curator for Italian American History will introduce the Italian American Archives collection.  Free with museum admission.

Building America’s Canals- a hands-on exhibit for children and families opens October 24, 2008 to January 15, 2009. Explore the history and technology of canals that were built in 19th-century America.
 
John Powers’ Ohio & Erie Canal Photographs - John Powers uses a special 7”x17” camera to create stunning studies of the Ohio & Erie Canal today - on display at the WRHS from October 24, 2009 to January 15, 2009.

Discover the WRHS Library Archives Canal History Resources – Visit the Library Archives before or after the 1:00 pm canal program for an introduction to our canal collections by WRHS Librarian Ann Sindelar.  Free with museum admission.
 
 
Saturday, October 25, 2008 – 1:00 p.m.
 
The Ohio & Erie Canal: Then and Now – Tim Donovan of the Ohio Canal Corridor shows how the canal, envisioned by George Washington in 1787 to connect the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, is being reused today as a recreational and economic resource.  Free with museum admission.

Meet Jack Gieck – Visit with the author of A Photo Album of Ohio’s Canal Era, 1825 – 1913, and view his documentaries: Ohio’s Canal Era – Part 1, Historical Background – 1:15 p.m., and Part 2, The Ohio & Erie Canal – 2:15 p.m.  View the Building America’s Canals interactive exhibit.  Jack may be able to answer your canal engineering questions.

Art in the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum – Sign up now for our fall creative arts program “The Automobile as a Lifestyle.” Antique automobiles and auto ads are used as creative inspiration. Curatorial staff provide the inside automotive scoop, and artist facilitators help with art techniques. For beginning to advanced artists, it’s fun for everyone! Admission to the Museum is $8.50 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $5 for children
and students.  Members are free.  With admission, visitors gain access to The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, The History Museum, The Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, the Hay-McKinney Mansion and the WRHS Library.
 
Special programming and admission rates are offered Wednesday evenings. Admission to the museum after 5pm is only $5 for all and parking is free on Wednesday nights.  Most programs are free with museum admission.
