CLEVELAND, OH –Discover the history of canals, and why
they were so important to Northeast Ohio with the following public programs:
Wednesday, December 3, 2008 – 7:00 p.m.
John Powers’ Ohio & Erie
Canal Photographs - John Powers uses a special 7”x17” camera to create stunning
studies of the Ohio & Erie Canal which are on display at the WRHS. Learn
from John how he composes his photos to show the fascinating results of the
battle of age, the devastating effects of flood, neglect and nature on the
canal - once a beautifully constructed work of engineering. Free with
museum admission.

Food,
Songs and Stories of the Old Ohio & Erie Canal – Cleveland Metroparks Historical
Interpreter Hank Mallery, Ed Shuman of the Canal Fulton Heritage Society, and
storytellers from Cuyahoga County Public Library lead a lively program.
WRHS Education Department recreates Joe Frogger cookies* and syllabub** - yummy
snacks from the canal era.
Building
America’s Canals will be on exhibition through Sunday, January 11 at The Western
Reserve Historical Society’s Norton Gallery.
The exhibit blends
history and science with hands-on activities that place the visitor in the role
of a canal engineer. Guests can discover the most effective routes of travel,
build an aqueduct supported by a masonry arch, learn how to build and operate a
lock, and explore the science behind suspension bridges.
Building
America’s Canals will help students, educators and visitors understand how the
construction and operation of towpath canals had profound effects on the
economic development of the United States in the 19th century. Each activity
station in the exhibit is accompanied by interpretive graphics that provide
important historical information about canal engineering.
In conjunction
with the Building America’s Canals exhibition, John Powers’ Ohio & Erie Canal
Photographs will be on display throughout the run of the exhibit. John
Powers uses a special 7”x17” camera to capture stunning studies of the Ohio &
Erie Canal today.
Admission to the Museum is $8.50 for adults,
$7.50 for seniors, and $5 for children and students. Members are free.
With admission, visitors gain access to The Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum, The
History Museum, The Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, the Hay-McKinney Mansion and
the WRHS Library.
Special programming and admission rates are offered
Wednesday evenings. Admission to the museum after 5pm is only $5 for all and
parking is free on Wednesday nights. Most programs are free with museum
admission.
