Education Volunteers

Do you like sharing knowledge?  Do you have a yearning to learn more local history?  You can do this with the Education Department at the Western Reserve Historical Society.  Our Education Volunteers help WRHS staff provide an enriching experience to students and adults alike.  There are various ways to get your hands-in Education while you assist the staff in the following categories:

Education Program Aides  - Assist museum educators with educational programs for school age children
Education Program Leaders - Conduct educational programs with school age children
Education Program Materials Assistants - Help with program material maintenance, creation and activities
Educational Research - Research content for Education Programs and Public Programs
Education Office Support - Assist with varied office tasks

Gallery Tours - Learn and interpret exhibits to visitors

Museum Collections Volunteers 

Looking for a way to really get your hands-on history?  This is your chance!  Join the History Museum Collections Volunteers and go deep into our collections and work in one of the following areas: 

Collections and Gallery Maintenance - Assist with collections cleaning and gallery cleaning and with collections inventory
Research - For upcoming and current exhibitions

Library/Archives Volunteers

The WRHS Archives Library houses 235,000 books; 25,000 volumes of newspapers; 30,500 rolls of microfilm, 1,000,000 prints and photographs; and more than 3,000 collections of manuscripts and archives that comprise more than six million items.  The areas to get your hands-in the library include:

Reference - Assist patrons with research needs
Cataloging - Assist with with our book collections
Manuscripts - Help with special collections
Reprography - Work with photo images - digital and reproduction
Specialized Archival Work - Work in a specialized Archives Division
Library General Researcher - Reserach special projects as needed for library staff and help with visitor research requests

Genealogy Assistant  - Assist patrons with specific genealogy research needs.

Guest Services

 In Visitor Services Volunteering you can provide direct assistance to the general public, visitors and guests.  We provide ample training for you to help us enrich each visitor’s experience. The following areas will help you help us to provide first rate services:  
Phone Attendants  - Answer main phone systems for WRHS
Gallery Attendants  - Learn and interpret exhibits to visitors
Receptionist - Greet and orient visitors to WRHS

Museum Store - Assist with sales and admissions

Youth Volunteers (Age 8 to 18)

Here is a way to keep our youngest volunteers with their hands-on history and community service.  Students develop a love of the institution and a sense of pride when they volunteer here at WRHS.

Does your class have a need to be involved?  Schedule a day for them to come to WRHS to see the sites and help with a one-day project for service to their community. Two week advance notice is needed.

Special Group Youth Volunteers  

One day service projects are available to Scout Groups, Clubs, Youth Organizations and Troops.

Crawford Auto Aviation Museum Volunteers

Join the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum Volunteers in their efforts to preserve, protect and present our auto-aviation collection.  Opportunities are available in the following areas:

Restoration - Help with restoration and preservation of auto collection
Maintenance - Help with general maintenance of auto collection
Research - Learn and research about our collection artifacts
Tour Guide/Gallery Assistant - Assist and lead visitors in the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum

Behind the Scenes Volunteers

Work behind the scenes with WRHS staff helping with daily tasks and directives.

Office Assistants - Help with special projects, computer work, mailings and other needed projects behind the scenes.

Group Volunteering and One Day Volunteering Event Info

 

 

 

 

Does your organization or group have a commitment to community service?  If you are interested in entering a partnership or volunteering for the Historical Society for a short period of time we have projects for you.  We can host the following types of Group Volunteering:

Large Organization Volunteering 

Many organizations in our community have service days/projects.  If you are interested in coming in for one day of service or developing a project please contact: Becky Carlino , bcarlino@wrhs.org. 

Volunteers and Special Events 

If you are interested in helping only at special events we can use your help. There are many different events at all of our sites that need help from you. 

Greek Volunteering 

There are many opportunities for service hours for Fraternities and Sororities throughout WRHS. Contact Becky Carlino , Volunteer Coordinator at bcarlino@wrhs.org.

Hale Farm & Village Volunteers

Hale Farm & Village Volunteers definitely get their hands-in and on history.  There are several areas to volunteer for at Hale Farm:

Arts & Crafts Demonstrations - Learn and interpret a 19th century trade to visitors; basket making, broom making, candle dipping, and more
Museum Store & Admissions - Help with sales and admissions
Special Events - Help on the weekends at large scale special events
Grounds & Maintenance Volunteers - Help with the upkeep of HFV by gardening or helping with other grounds maintenance
Behind-the-Scenes - Assist with program preparation or help with office related tasks
Interpretation - Learn how to interpret in Wheatfield Village

Shandy Hall, Geneva & Loghurst, Canfield

The Western Reserve Historical Society has sites throughout the Western Reserve including Shandy Hall in Geneva and Loghurst in Canfield, Ohio .  The following areas need your help:    

Shandy Hall and Loghurst are open by appointment only and for limited special events.  Please indicate on your volunteer application if you would like to help at one of these particular sites.
