Vatican Splendors Exhibition
University Circle
The Western Reserve Historical Society (WRHS) in Cleveland will be the host for a major international traveling exhibition in 2008, Vatican Splendors from Saint Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Swiss Guard. Approximately 200 works of art and historically significant objects, many of which have never left the Vatican, will be on display in our museum in University Circle from May 31, 2008 through September 7, 2008. The collection will never again be reassembled, making this a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.  Opportunties for corpororate, foundation and individual sponsorship are available.

 Hay McKinney House Restoration
WRHS is committed to raising money to fund an outside assessment of the  restoration needs of the Hay-McKinney mansion, one of two Italian Renaissance style houses that form an integral part of WRHS' headquarters on East Boulevard. Since 1939, WRHS has used the building as a showcase for its decorative arts and furniture collections. Our assessment of the house is that it needs critical maintenance, preservation, and restoration work. Specific needs include exterior restoration, replacement of the north wall, new energy-efficient windows, repairs to the sandstone stairway, resealing the building foundation, complete replacement of reception room porch, and landscaping concerns. The Hay-McKinney mansion is both a cultural treasure, and a facility essential to the operation of our museum.

History of Cleveland Baseball Exhibit
The Sports Archives of the Western Reserve Historical Society will present A Proud Tradition: Cleveland Baseball 1869 -2008 from April 2008 through March of 2009. This exhibit will highlight Cleveland baseball from the beginnings of professional baseball in Cleveland through the present day Cleveland Indians.

Short and Sweet: Two Centuries of American Childhood
The exhibition features over one hundred artifacts, and will be on view in the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing through November 2008. Short & Sweet: Two Centuries of American Childhood draws from the Society’s extensive collections of costume, toys, fine art, furniture, and photographs to address America’s evolving attitude toward youth from 1740-1960, and focuses on chidlren's dress, playtime, organized recreation, education, and spiritual upbringing.

National History Day
National History Day (NHD) is an educational program devoted to improving the teaching and learning of history in American schools. NHD is a meaningful way for students to study historical issues, ideas, people and events by engaging in historical research. The Western Reserve Historical Society Education Department is currently the home for the administrative offices of Ohio District 3 National History Day. District 3 consists of five counties, Cuyahoga, Lake, Lorain, Medina and Summit, and sponsors a regional competition in early spring each year.

Core Exhibit of Western Reserve History
This permanent community history exhibit will explore the rich history, culture, and development of the region once widely known as the Western Reserve--the region that today encompasses most of Northeast Ohio.   The overall goal of the project is to develop an exhibit that explores key moments and topics in Cleveland and Western Reserve History, from 1796 to 1996, and presents these ideas in a manner that is inspiring and accessible to modern audiences of all ages. Opening in 2010 the Historical Society is currently seeking funds to plan and develop this exhibit.

East Clark Elementary School Partnership
Located on East 162nd St., the East Clark elementary school students have infrequent exposure to the programming available at cultural institutions.  The purpose of the partnership is to combine the talent and resources of the teachers at East Clark with those of the museum education staff at the Western Reserve Historical Society.  The goal is  to help students build skills that will improve their academic performance, especially in math and science. This partnership benefits all of the nearly 400 students at the school. East Clark is currently under academic emergency and met only 1 of the 14 state indicators in the 2005-2006 school year. It has a 100% economically disadvantaged school population.

Educational School Programs
For the past 60 years, WRHS has been delivering quality educational programming for the schoolchildren of northeast Ohio. Last year, our main campus in University Circle hosted nearly 30,000 schoolchildren, the majority of whom experienced our programs on-site. The Education Department at the Historical Society presents over 35 inquiry-based, hands-on School Programs that correlate to State of Ohio Academic Content Standards in Social Studies, Math, Science, and the Language Arts. With increased emphasis on the importance of meeting the requirements of these standards and the new high stakes Ohio Graduation Test, many districts are looking to cultural institutions such as museums and science centers for help in providing the specialized academic content needed by their students and teachers. The three major types of programming we provide are:

On-Site Museum Programs in the Crawford-Auto Aviation Museum and the History Museum that integrate the fine collections of artifacts and documents of the Society with hands-on materials in well-equipped education spaces throughout the museum areas;

Outreach to the Classroom Programs bring our award-winning programs and hands-on materials to increasing numbers of schoolchildren at their schools each year;

Interactive Distance Learning Programs are broadcast via videoconferencing live from our Distance Learning Lab in the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum. Hands-on materials are sent out ahead of time to students and teachers for use during the connection.

Crawford Auto Aviation Museum

Senior Outreach Program
The Auto collection of the Crawford travels to local senior facilities with an interpreter and takes residents and participants for rides.  A short lecture is also part of the program.
Crawford Pit Crew
The staff and volunteers of Crawford Auto Aviation Museum have found a great deal of merit in the old saying “experience is the best teacher”. With this in mind, we have developed a three part program of education, mentorship, and service that will prepare participants to adapt scientific, technological, and engineering advances to meet today’s exciting challenges in antique and classic autos and airplane restoration and preservation.

Hale Farm and Village

Preservation and Maintenance
Hale Farm & Village’s collection of 32 historic structures are an integral part of the educational mission of the site. Together this collection tells an important story about this region. In particular, they speak to the patterns of early settlement and the development of the region, giving our visitors a sense of how local and regional experiences have shaped the history of this state and nation.

These structures, however; are in a critical preservation situation, limiting the public educational benefit from these buildings. Subject to year round weather conditions, the annual maintenance and preservation needs of these structures is extensive and calls for significant energy and financial resources year after year.
