Participants can compare and contrast the land use and life styles of American Indians and early settlers in Ohio using hands-on artifacts of daily life from both cultures.

From There to Here:  Traveling Immigration Trunks
Unpack belongings in the luggage of families traveling into Northeast Ohio to establish their new homes from the 1840s through the 1980s.  Use artifacts and documents to unravel their stories.  Families represented include a choice of Russian, Irish, German, Turkish, Mexican, Appalachian, African American, or Puerto Rican.  Number of trunks used in a program depends on size of group.

Keep the Ball Rolling: Early Presidential Campaigns set the Stage for Today’s Elections
You may choose two or more of ten campaigns from 1828 through 1960.  Presentation uses political cartoons, maps, campaign memorabilia, and newspaper articles to build the story of each election and its outcome. Becoming media savvy began a long time ago.  Call for more information.

A Soldier’s Life in the Civil War: Ohio
Ohio had the highest percentage of population enlisted in the military of any union state. Sixty percent of all the men between the ages of 18 and 45 were in the service, totaling 320,000. Casualties numbered 35,475 men, more than 10% of all the Buckeyes in uniform during the war.  Using hands-on uniforms, equipment, photos, documents, and artifacts, participants learn what life was like for a Civil War soldier, and reveal some of the
individual stories of Ohio’s soldiers.

Northeast Ohio on the Homefront: 1945
Remembering the Homefront in WWII.  Participants listen to some brief oral histories from Ohioans while viewing memorabilia of those who experienced WWII right here in Cleveland in a short power point presentation. Want ads from the newspapers and other WWII memorabilia such as ration books and canned goods fill in the story of wartime rationing of food, shoes, gasoline, tires, and metals.  Other hands-on materials relate to recycling drives by school children, and war stamp and war bond campaigns.

The Story of Tinkerbelle:
Robert Manry’s Perilous Sailing Journey Across the Atlantic Ocean in the tiny Tinkerbelle. Participants use Manry’s hand-drawn map to trace this record-setting feat of daring sailing in the 13.5 foot sail boat.  Photos and artifacts similar to the equipment he took with him are part of the program.
