Update on the Crawford Collection
A message to our members and constituents:
The Western Reserve Historical Society’s Board and staff are dedicated to its mission—to acquire and preserve the history of Northeast Ohio and to educate the public about its meaning and relevancy for today. In terms of the Society’s collections, especially those of the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum, this means focusing on acquiring vehicles as well as other artifacts and documents that represent Northeast Ohio's contributions to automobile and aviation history. The Society's refined mission is also to demonstrate the relevance of these historical materials to current and future debates on energy efficiency and entrepreneurship.
WRHS has deaccessioned items from its various collections since its founding in 1867. Currently, it has deaccessioned vehicles from its Crawford collection and made them available for sale at auction. (See list below). Deaccessioned items are determined to be non-essential to the collection if they are either duplicates or not mission-related. The Historical Society regularly reviews its entire collection to determine what is essential and true to its mission. All Historical Society deaccessions follow prudent best-practices museum standards. The Society cherishes each of its unique and priceless collections. We will continue to be one of the most highly regarded historical societies in the country—weaving together our artifacts and documents to tell the unique stories of Northeast Ohio and their impact on state, national and global history.
