1881-1890

After 1880, Cleveland's philanthropists introduced new forms of organization in charitable giving. These organizations promoted both efficiency of service and civic wellbeing while evincing concern for the entire population regardless of religious affiliation.

 

1881 Charity Organization Society founded to promote efficiency in Cleveland's charitable efforts

1881 Hungarian Benevolent and Social Union (HBSU) established by Hungarian Jews to aid members in illness or death and to aid non-members in need

1882 Western Reserve School of Design for Women (later Cleveland Institute of Art) established

1882 Cleveland Metroparks Zoo established through the donation of land and a herd of deer by Jeptha Wade

1882 Montefiore Home dedicated by the Jewish fraternal order Kesher Shel Barzel to provide a home for poor elderly Jews

1884 Dorcas Home established by the Dorcas Society to provide refuge for sick and destitute women

1884 St. Alexis Hospital founded by Srs. M. Leonarda and M. Alexia of the Order of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration to meet the health care needs of working people

1884 Mt. St. Mary's Institute established by the Catholic Sisters of Notre Dame to house and care for neglected and abandoned girls; closed in 1929

1886 St. Ignatius College (John Carroll University) founded by the Jesuit Order

1887 Jones School and Home for Friendless Children (later known as the Jones Home of Children's Services) established by Carlos and Mary Jones to serve as an orphanage and foster home

1888 Eliza Jennings Home founded by Eliza Jennings and the YWCA to care for the elderly and chronically ill
