The
summer bedroom, used by James Garfield and his wife during
the hotter months of the year, is located to the left of
the front hall. Its furnishings reveal something of the
man who lived here. The secretary desk used by Mr. Garfield
in Hiram, Ohio, represents his time as president of the
Western Reserve Eclectic Institute. A needlepoint portrait
of the General in his Civil War uniform reminds us that
he had had the military experience so essential to U.S.
Presidential candidates in those years after the war.
