About History Day

National History Day is a meaningful way for students to study historical issues, ideas, people and events by engaging in historical research. When studying history through historical research, students and teachers practice critical inquiry: asking questions of significance, time and place. Through careful questioning history students are immersed in a detective story too engaging to stop reading.

History Day in Ohio is an exciting co-curricular program for students in grades 6-8 and 9-12. Each year, students work as individuals or in teams, conducting research based on the year’s theme, and creating a project in one of the following categories:

• Historical papers  • Original Performances • Media Documentaries • Exhibits • Websites

During the District 3 Contest, students will present their project to a team of volunteer judges gathered from our community, explaining their research process and answering questions about their project. Awards are given at the end of the day in each category, and special prizes are also awarded from community groups.  The district’s qualifying winners go on to Ohio History Day, the State competition in Columbus, Ohio. State winners have the opportunity to compete in National History Day in June.  Our competition is open to all public schools, private schools, parochial schools, virtual academies, home schools and independent students.

This year's district contest will take place on Saturday March 24, 2012 at WRHS and Case Western Reserve University. The contest theme for 2012 is "Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History". Click here for more information about this year's theme from National History Day!
